One of the biggest style successes in the car world in the last decade has been the four-door swoopy-coupe. And the whole genre started life – at least in a mainstream way – with the launch of the Mercedes CLS in 1994. It was Mercedes’ return to the ‘Executive Coupe’ market after a ten year gap (the W124 version of the E-Class Coupe) but broke new ground with its four-door configuration in a coupe body.
The Dodge Viper has received a reprieve. After nearly a year of trying to sell the iconic sports car business, Chrysler said Friday it will continue to build the Viper SRT10. Production was expected to end at the Connor Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, known as the “Snake Pit,” in December.
Chrysler has ordered 93 first-generation Dodge Vipers to be crushed, including what is believed to be the fourth Viper ever made. A Chrysler representative sent a letter to South Puget Sound Community College, which currently owns the Viper with VIN# 4, informing them that they must crush the car within two weeks. Automakers regularly donate unsellable non-street legal vehicles to automotive-engineering programs at colleges and universities, reserving the right to order the vehicles destroyed for insurance purposes.
